The Movember Foundation is proud to announce that, as a direct result of the amazing fundraising efforts of our Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, scientists have, for the first time, constructed a complete genetic map of prostate cancer.  This is a truly historic development in the fight against prostate cancer that will greatly expand the understanding of how this disease works and will eventually lead to better, more personalized treatment.

This means that eventually, patients will be able to work with their doctors to map the individual genetic alterations of their prostate cancer to determine the specific treatment needed for them.  That means less men dying from prostate cancer, more effective treatment with less side effects, and it will spare some men from unnecessary treatments, eliminating an estimated CAD $1.5 billion spent each year in over-treatment.

This important progress was accomplished by sequencing just a handful of genomes. Hundreds more need to be sequenced to move sequencing into routine clinical practice. If you are suffering from prostate cancer, ask your doctor about possible studies and clinical trials.

This study was supported by the Prostate Cancer Foundation, using funds raised by Movember. Researchers from the Broad Institute of Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston collaborated on the project, which was published in this month's journal Nature.

Movember's vision is to forever change the face of men's health. Thanks to the Movember community, breakthroughs like this show we are making great strides in achieving that vision. Together, we are making a difference.

This is just one of the many amazing projects Movember is currently funding. We look forward to sharing more outcomes with you through the year, all made possible by Movember funding and the power of the Mo.
