Prostate cancer

I have had family members within varying stages of prostate cancer treatment for my entire life. Before I was born, my granddad was diagnosed with prostate cancer shortly after his retirement. He had not seen a doctor for years prior to retiring and was encouraged by his daughter-in-law (my mother) to make an appointment with a doctor. An immediate diagnosis was made due to how enlarged his prostate had become, and as a lifelong healthy man he experienced little symptoms and did not stop him from golfing and gardening. His prostate was removed, but soon after the cancer migrated into his bones. He spent his retired life as a part of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency advocating for the care of others and supporting them through their journey. Cancer eventually ended his life in 2019 at age 85.

More recently, I had an uncle who was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Symptoms were present, but as an individual who kept things to himself, he did not discuss it with family and address it soon enough. His cancer spread into stomach/abdominal cancer, and at age 64 he quickly deteriorated and died in a way I can only describe as tortuous. I spent the last few days of his life supporting him in palliative care; and watching a physically strong labor worker decline was shocking. He died in 2022.

This past summer (2024), my father advocated for checking his PSA levels to prescreen for cancer, as to not follow the diagnosis path of his father. His PSA levels returned above the threshold for concern, and after further screening deemed that there was no cancer present at this time.

There are other individuals (3+) in my life that are at different stages of the three stories above. They do not want their stories shared publicly. Stats show 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, but in my family circle the inverse of 7 in 8 seems to be true.

Self-reflecting has allowed me to think about the tendencies I have seen above. How many times have I “toughed” out my own health concerns? Pushed through pain and been embarrassed to discuss issues with family or my doctor. Why does a “strong man” accompany the idea of shouldering burdens individually and being embarrassed to discuss sensitive health issues. At the point of becoming irreversible conditions your story will become known to those closest to you, so why wait until that point? Is our ego selfish, and are we regarding the feelings of our family members and those who rely on us? Knowing my family history, I fear it is a matter of time before I am dealing with prostate cancer myself, and all I can do is take the time to visit the doctor, stay healthy, and live my life to the fullest. As the father of a 2-year-old (and a second on the way!) I need to do these things for them almost more so than myself. This is a battle with myself and overcoming my own reservations.

Book that appointment you have been dreading. Get that bloodwork done you have been putting off (as a person with needle phobia this is a hard issue for me). Talk with those closest to you. Go for that run. Set an example for those around you, as I am challenging myself to do.

The hairiest month of the year is just over a week from getting underway, and things are already heating up in the Oil Rig Rumble.

We have a fun month ahead of us and want to make sure you have everything you need to make this Movember the best one yet for your company. Please send a note to Evan.Connor@Movember.com if you’re looking for details on the challenge.

As part of our partnership with the Edmonton Oilers, your company could win the chance to lace up your skates for a game of hockey against other Rumblers on NHL ice at Rogers Place arena in Edmonton on Wednesday, December 11.

How To Enter For Your Chance To Win:
Companies participating in the 2024 Oil Rig Rumble Challenge will automatically receive one entry to the contest when they raise $20,000 CAD, and an additional entry for every $5,000 raised above and beyond.

On November 30th we will randomly draw 4 companies from those eligible to send 10 players each to fill the roster. Giddy up!

The contest is open to Canadian residents, excluding Quebec and will close at 12pm MT on November 30. Winning companies will be contacted and announced later that day to claim their spots.

Let's get ready to rumble!

Enjoy this month. Let's start some lifesaving conversations and raise a few bucks along the way.

Thank-you for your commitment and support.

We've now arrived at Movember 30 and everyone in this challenge should pause for a moment to reflect on an amazing job done, what can only be described as an epic 'stache and an impressive commitment to help change the face of men's health.

As Mo season is coming to a close, I want to flag that the leaderboards will officially close on Thursday, December 7th at 5 pm EST, marking the moment we crown our 2023 Movember champions of each challenge. While donations can still be received after this time, please note that they won't contribute to the leaderboard race.

Thanks for all you have done this year and will continue to do as we move forward.
