Mental health and suicide prevention

Growing up in your local rink's dressing room, I can't count the times real life challenges were pushed below the surface to satisfy the socially constructed notion of being a man, "toughing it out" or, avoiding being "soft".

In reality, men face the same issues and mental health struggles every human can face, regardless of gender. Whether in the lockeroom / dressing room or behind closed doors, all issues are real, valid, and should be addressed with confidence. The concept of how a man can be "defined" often leads to silence and struggle, which leads to angst, among other feelings, evidenced by the alarmingly high rates of suicide amongst men.

How are we supposed to help those we care about with issues that aren't known or are commonly perceived to be invalid? How can we help influence happiness, and lower suicide rates and unhappiness, if we fly blind?

It starts with asking the question and eliminating the stigma of "weakness" associated with men's and all, mental health, and ends with being there to help.
