My motivation

DJ’S STORY, RE FIGHTING CANCER.

Don’t hesitate; don’t procrastinate: Don’t take life for granted.

Cancer is most times genetic
10 years ago my brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he advised me to “get my prostate checked out” I did; resulting in my also being diagnosed with prostrate cancer.

EARLY detection; With treatments: GOOD!!!
Because of early detection, the kind of cancer and because we were treated in time, thank God, the results were in our favor; the treatments worked very well. The prognosis for both of us were excellent, one would say, “we nipped it in the bud!” Early detection very important!

Remission; not cure
After my treatments for the prostate cancer, and reacting favorably to the treatments, I went into remission...Always remember; remission is not cure, remission means: for a period, not forever, once you have cancer, the possibility of it’s return is always there. It’s your responsibility to keep ahead of the disease, (by the way, never “my” cancer. That is; never claim this disease as your own, hence “the cancer” never “my cancer”.)

Listen to the advice of your oncologist….
I was advised to have had an annual check up with my oncologist, please note; I did so, but only for the first 3 years. After the three years, and because I thought I was “cancer free” (please note “after having cancer you are never totally cancer free”) Because all went well for those 3 years with my check ups, I relaxed, took these 3 years of good results for granted that all was well, I reneged on the advice of my oncologist to have an annual check up by (an oncologist) I never returned......that was not good......

Don’t take anything for granted….
It is very important to note, during and after this time, it was not that I was not seeing and examined by other Drs. Faithfully I had my annual physicals with all the various blood test etc by my GP, or other specialists, but never a follow up by an oncologist... Actually, when I started having signs and symptoms that something was wrong, I went under vigorous examinations and treatments for various other health issues eg. Diabetes and high blood pressure, but I was never examined to see if there was an issue with the cancer returning. Don’t take it for granted that the Drs. are always going to make the correct decision “out of their specialized field” to do all that is best for you. You have to take charge and remind them and yourself “Remember, I am a cancer survivor” After being diagnosed with cancer, I can’t emphasize enough how very important it is for you to have “your annual check ups with an oncologist as long as you live, at lease once per year, more if need be.”
Study and know your body; if you have any unusual pains, aches or discomfort out of the norm, don’t take it for granted, don’t hesitate or procrastinate, check not only with your primary care Dr, but also always with your oncologist. Let them run diagnostic tests. Better safe than sorry….
