We all know that there are good and bad foods out there, right? Tomatoes & blueberries = Good. Foods that are high in saturated fat = Bad. But how do you combine these good dietary elements with medication to actively prevent and treat early stage prostate cancer? That’s what Canada’s Dr. Vincent Fradet is attempting to determine as a result of a Clinician Scientist Award funded by Mo Bros and Mo Sistas during Movember.

Each year a portion of funds raised during Movember go towards Prostate Cancer Canada's Clinician Scientist Awards. These awards provide funding for scientists who work to translate research knowledge into improved patient care and health.

One of the most recent recipients of a Clinician Scientist Award is Dr. Vincent Fradet. Dr. Fradet is investigating the effect of combining drug and dietary elements on the progression and prevention of prostate cancer.

Within this investigation, Dr. Fradet will work with a group of patients on “active surveillance”, men who have been diagnosed with early-stage, low-grade prostate cancer. These patients are monitored over time to determine when treatment is required (if at all) based on the progression of the cancer.

Working with a nutritionist, Dr. Fradet will divide the patients into sub-groups and provide them with one of the commonly used drugs to treat inflammation of the prostate, while monitoring changes in their dietary intake of fatty acids.

The study aims to develop a model for examining the effect of drug and diet interventions on low-risk prostate cancer.  A better understanding of the biological mechanisms of drug and dietary interventions on early stage disease will enable development of methods for more personalized prevention and less invasive treatment.

Thanks to the crucial funds raised through Movember, our beneficiary partner is now in a position to expand its research program, funding large scale and long-term research initiatives that, before now, were not possible due to lack of funding.  Through this research – and other research initiatives, the funds raised by Movember will change the face of men’s health and impact the lives of those men and their families who are dealing with, or will be dealing with, a prostate cancer diagnosis.  For more info, please visit prostatecancer.ca and visit movember.com for tips and information on men's health.
