Mental health and suicide prevention

This chin hasn't seen the light of day in nearly 20 years. I've gone full baby-face for Movember, and frankly, I look a little terrified (or terrifying - you decide) which is fitting. I’m doing this because I’m officially not young anymore, and the list of things that can go wrong with the old machinery gets scarier every year. But the mental stuff? That silent suffering has taken a brutal toll on too many friends over the years. We've lost some truly great ones who just couldn't speak up. And so, hoping to take advantage of the Blue Jays' World Series run to I’m growing this mustache in tribute to the team's legendary 'staches, from Dave Stieb and Rance Mulliniks to the modern king, Davis Schneider. This mustache is my call to all men to check in, speak up, and make sure we all make it home safe. Help me keep my guts and my chin up

Day Five Update

Woke up to two incredible pieces of news:

1- 'mo is at a point where I feel comfortable sharing my progress. Still looks horrible, but starting to resemble at least the idea of a moustache. Photo in profile.

2- Moustachioed-pitcher Shane Bieber has decided to exercise his $16mm player option, and will be staying with the Jays through the 2026 season, which got me thinking about ranking (from worst to best) the 7 most important Blue Jays moustaches of all time. So I'm proud to present:

The 7 Most Important Blue Jays Moustaches of All Time Ranked From Worst to Best

7. Tim Johnson
A truly greasy, ill-fitting shadow. It's exactly the kind of untrustworthy 'stache you'd expect from a man who'd lie about his time in Vietnam. Pure, low-grade villainy.

6. Sean Reid-Foley
His mustache is tragically underwhelming, failing to rise above replacement level, much like his career WAR of -0.1. A classic mid-2010s draft bust.

5. Cito Gaston
The sturdy, trustworthy lip broom. The definition of managerial gravitas.

4. Davis Schneider
He’s keeping the Blue Jays' glorious moustache tradition alive for the next generation. A modern, nostalgic triumph and instant fan favourite.

3. George Bell
A Silver Slugger-winning, MVP-calibre thicket of excellence. Arguably more intimidating than his batting stance.

2. Dave Stieb
He titled his autobiography Tomorrow I'll Be Perfect, but his 'stache is perfect today. A hard-nosed ace broom.

1. Rance Mulliniks
The undisputed GOAT. Rance walked so Davis could run. The greatest upper-lip artistry in Jays history.

DAY 4 UPDATE:

Found it difficult to write an update today, but I'm committed to doing this every day until the end of the month.
I'm struggling to see any growth; the faint moustache outline I noticed yesterday hasn't changed. I'm hesitant to post an update photo until I've got something tangible, but at this rate don't know when that will be.

Good news from day 4:

None.

I'm not trying to be dramatic, but I'm ready to throw in the towel... wait... what's that?? A $100 DONATION? Incredible! Once again, the generosity of those around me has pulled me back from the edge of the abyss.

More good news from day 4:

Had a chance to think long and hard about why I'm doing this, and remembered I have a long, long history of putting myself in compromising situations to raise money for causes I believe in. If I can meet my $500 goal by end of day Thursday, not only will I share a photo of my updated 'stache, I may decide to share the story (and possibly the video, depending on how much over my goal I make it) of the time I learned the choreography to Beyonce's Single Ladies to raise money for a good cause.

DAY 3 UPDATE:

Woke up to an unbelievable 5 total donations in a single day; I'm consistently blown away by the generosity of my friends and coworkers.

Good news from day 3: If I squint just right, I can kinda map out the stubbly outline of my pending moustache. This must be how Michaelangelo felt creating David - as the statue is in the stone, the moustache is beneath the skin, waiting to be revealed. It is the fates who control my moustachioed destiny, not the artist.

Bad news from day 3: Still struggling to feel comfortable with the whole beardless-hairless look. Spent a good portion of Sunday frustrated by blank stares after repeatedly asking my 6 year old if I was not turtley enough for the Turtle club. Thought way too long and seriously about how growing a moustache is similar to Michaelangelo creating David.

Really need this moustache to show up soon.

DAY 2 UPDATE:
I originally thought it would be fun to post some daily updates of mustache-growing progress, however, I'm starting to realize that it may take at least a few days to have anything to report on.
Good news from day 2:
Wife and kids are no longer involuntarily shuddering every time beardless me walks by.
Bad news from day 2:
Starting to appreciate how much a beard really balances out a bald guy's face. Can't wait for even the slightest moustache to show up, so that bald-and-beardless-me no longer resembles a swollen big toe.
