Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with an estimated one in eight Canadian men expected to be diagnosed in their lifetimes. For prostate cancer that remains in the prostate, localized, the survival rate at five years is virtually 100 per cent.
Still, the Canadian Cancer Society estimates that, on average, 14 Canadian men are expected to die from prostate cancer every day in 2024.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?
(Dr. Howard E. Lewine M.D. Chief Medical Editor, Harvard Health Publishing)

In its early stages, prostate cancer rarely causes symptoms. In fact, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer have no symptoms. Doctors suspect prostate cancer if a blood test shows high levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). However,if the cancer presses on the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, it can cause a weak urine stream, a need to urinate often, and sometimes an inability to urinate.

Resilient Minds is a peer-support program that launched in 2016 and began rolling out in Ontario in 2020 with the help from funding through Movember, and aims to help firefighters across the country talk about trauma and mental health issues and teach them to develop self-care skills.

Firefighters who have completed the training have reported a remarkable 95% decrease in stress levels, and have experienced a transformation and shift in culture with regards to a more open dialogue about mental health and psychological illness.
