Mental health and suicide prevention

I have been suffering from severe and chronic nerve pain for the past three years. This is the result of a recent diagnosis of severe osteoarthritis and degenerated discs in my neck which had completely blocked off the C6 nerve that controls pain and motor functions in my left arm and shoulder. Picture the worst muscle cramp you have ever got, then imagine it never going away regardless of painkillers, therapy, or movement and that is what I have experienced daily for years. This summer the pain was getting so bad it felt like I was being tortured 24/7 with no relief from painkillers.
I like so many other men out there am the type of person that pushes my emotions and feelings to a dark corner in the back of my head and moves on with the day. This worked well up until one day when it didn't and my mind broke as a result of the constant pain I was feeling, leading to 2 attempts on my life this summer. One of which was very close to being successful and resulted in me being detained by the police under the mental health act and put on suicide watch for 24 hours at the hospital.

It was only after 2 suicide attempts did our healthcare system escalate my case directly to a spinal surgeon where it was concluded my only course of action moving forward was spinal surgery. I can honestly say that up until an hour before I got the call that I was going into surgery my mental health was so bad I was certain I wouldn’t make it to Christmas, I had lost all hope and will to keep pushing forward.

I am now 3 weeks post-op after having the C6 disc in my neck replaced with an artificial one, and am now 100% nerve-pain-free. For once in a very long time, I am feeling optimistic about my future, and am now a strong advocate for men's mental health.

There are a lot of people out there suffering in silence, so I would like to challenge you all to help raise awareness around this cause as best as you can.
