My motivation

Fundraising for cause areas including:
Mental health and suicide prevention

Hi - I'm from Calgary, Alberta, and in my second year participating in Movember with Team Calgary Flames, I have teamed up with the Foundation in running the New York Marathon on November 3rd, 2019. This will be my first marathon, and it felt like the right time to pursue one after the success of last year's Movember campaign where I ran 300km in November 2018 based on the $13,000 that were generously donated through the campaign. The support I received from the friends, family, and colleagues within my community was beyond my wildest hopes and I was really honoured to have received the level of support during a challenging period in my life.

Although the 300km was taxing for me, the challenge was minimal when compared to the anxiety challenges I have faced in my life, and gave me a platform to share my story, and allow my message to reach people facing similar issues and raise awareness of these issues for those that aren't as directly affected by them.

I have kept up with my running, although not to the same monthly benchmark, to put me in a position to not only run a marathon, but also take it very seriously, as I my goal is to run the NY marathon in under 4 hours. If I raise over $10,000 again - I will do my best to push myself to do it in under 3:30.

My personal story is that I discovered in March 2018 that I had been managing a chronic anxiety disorder for my entire life, and the stress that it put on my mind and body caused an autoimmune reaction, alopecia, whereby my eyebrow, facial hair, and hair in the back of my head stopped growing. Although the hair loss was annoying, it is only superficial.... it ended up being a blessing for me, as it made a serious issue that I dealt with quietly and unknowingly, so obvious that it led to a terrific year of self discovery and personal growth. Additionally, when I was 8 years old, my mother (Jean Cochrane) was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and essentially robbed her of being able to live a "normal life".... her sense of reality is long gone, and because of diagnosed mental issues, I never did get to learn the "real" version of her.

For these reasons, I have become very passionate about mental health, and how each one of us as members of our society can improve these types of conditions by being more open in our personal struggles, and being able to help identify and act when we see a friend or family member that may be fighting internally. If my efforts with this campaign can reach just 1 person, that can either directly, or indirectly impact their mental health, I will consider it a very worthwhile venture.

Movember is a great platform to share this message. One of the 4 main categories that Movember is working to tackle is men's "Mental Health and Suicide Prevention" and is developing programs to significantly reduce the amount of mens suicides, and provide programs and outlets for those facing mental health difficulties. Please join me in helping Movember raise funds to support these programs, and share my message in the importance of mental health.
