Why I’m Growing for Movember
In over two decades in mining, I’ve seen us master physical safety. We engineer out risks, build protocols, create systems that protect bodies. But the mental and emotional risks? Those we’ve let live in silence.
The rotation life—weeks away from home, isolated from everything familiar—creates struggles we rarely name. Add societal expectations about what it means to “be a man,” and you have a recipe for silent suffering that too many of us know too well.
This isn’t abstract for me. I’ve watched substance abuse tear through families. I’ve seen violence ripple across communities. I’ve lost friends and colleagues to suicide. And cancer—prostate and testicular—has touched my family and extended family in ways that taught me these battles are interconnected. Men’s health isn’t one thing. It’s physical, mental, emotional—all woven together.
This year, I’m carrying the memory of two friends: Kevin and Damon. Both died suddenly, unexpectedly. Their lives were full of resilience, creativity, compassion. They showed me that real strength isn’t silence—it’s authenticity, connection, showing up for each other. Their legacy pushes me to keep talking about what mining culture still too often hides.
Movember is where that conversation happens. It funds mental health resources built for the unique challenges we face. It drives research that saves lives. And it’s working to shift the narrative—to make asking for help as normal as wearing PPE.
My mission this year: bridge the gap between the unspoken struggles in our industry and the broader conversation about men’s health. Create space where every miner feels seen, heard, supported. Where we treat mental and physical wellbeing with the same rigor we bring to safety protocols.
We already have the tools. Teamwork. Resilience. Mutual support. These are mining values. Let’s turn them toward the health challenges in front of us.
Here’s what I’m asking: Share your story if you can. Listen without judgment when others share theirs. Stand with the people around you. Live authentically. Stay present. Build quiet resilience together.
For Kevin. For Damon. For everyone we’ve lost, everyone still fighting, and everyone who will face these battles tomorrow—I’m standing with Movember.
Every mustache grown, every conversation started, every dollar raised moves us closer to real change.
Join me.

Today's Movember hike was a challenge and an inspiration. Tackled the Alakai Swamp and Pihea Trails in Kōkeʻe State Park, navigating deep mud, fog, and slippery paths. This 7-mile journey, with its stunning views and rugged terrain, symbolizes the mental health battles many face daily. It's a reminder of why we push for men's health awareness. #Movember2023 #MentalHealth #HikingForACause

**Movember: A Journey Close to My Heart**

Movember holds a special place in my heart. It echoes the personal challenges I've witnessed: from my father's fight against testicular cancer, an uncle's struggle with schizophrenia, to the silent battles of anxiety and depression in remote communities. My experiences in remote metals mining have shown me the often unspoken hardships men endure.

This Movember, I stand for all those who've suffered in silence. It's time to bring these issues into the light.
