During the pandemic,I saw people struggling with mental health, which led me to join forces with Movember. I was dealing with my own mental health challenges and decided to use my voice and public image to make an impact. It’s important for me to continue raising awareness for men's health so we can start breaking down the harmful stigmas that society has put in place around mental health.
The Paralympics is so incredible because every competitor has had to overcome monumental physical challenges. When I was 10 years old, I had my fingers and legs amputated in addition to a slew of other medical complications before I could even think about playing sports again. The Paralympics are a true testament to the human spirit. It’s incredible to witness these athlete’s’ commitment to building their body and mind in a way that allows them to compete against the top athletes on the planet.
When times were tough, I leaned on my support system. I’m grateful to be surrounded by people who go out of their way to lend an open ear or share advice. Sport has been a healthy outlet for me as a coping mechanism, and I truly believe that a bit of movement can be the first step to improving your mindset.
Giving back to the communities that have made it possible for me to be an athlete drives me. I try to volunteer at sporting events knowing that these events would not be possible without the community donating their time. I hope that through this experience I am exposed to more public speaking opportunities that will give me the chance to share my story and inspire others who may be struggling.
Taking care of our bodies may not be easy or enjoyable but it pays off in the long run. I have spent more time in ice tubs than I care to admit but little things like these are what empower us to continue performing at the highest level. Rest and the power of saying “no” are how I find balance in my emotional wellbeing. I’ve always been a bit of a “yes man,” but I’m slowly realizing that I can’t say yes to everything. Creating personal boundaries by leaving my schedule open the day after I return from a long trip is one way I create space for myself.
The challenges that face men today are unique. Skewed portrayals of masculinity that circulate on social media are not helping men be comfortable speaking up when they are struggling. So many people internalize their issues instead of reaching out for the support they need. I couldn’t believe what a game changer it was when I started to open up, and the relief I felt afterwards is unmatched. I try to be grateful for what I have and work hard for the things that I really want. My philosophy is to stay positive and have fun on your journey. Remember that you’re not alone, and you don’t have to solve all your problems alone either.
