Alberta Firefighters Score Major Victory For Their Health
1 MIN READ
Last year, firefighters across Canada grew moustaches for Movember to change the face of men's health.

Through the power of the Mo, awareness of men's health issues became the personal mission for the Alberta Firefighters Association. They made it their goal to have prostate cancer screenings included in their insurance program. As a result of their outstanding efforts, the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening test is now covered by their health insurance.

"Statistically, firefighters are at 3-6 times greater risk than the general public of getting cancers," said Rob Good, Secretary of the Spruce Grove Firefighters Association. "Despite the obvious dangers of our job- heat, flames, smoke, building collapse- there are hidden dangers from which we can not protect ourselves." Good described the addition of prostate cancer to the list of insured cancers as a 'huge accomplishment for Alberta firefighters and firefighters around the world."

Last year, 416 firefighters raised an outstanding $45,149 for Movember's beneficiary partner, Prostate Cancer Canada. Twenty-two men from the Alberta Firefighters Asssociation, in addition to working hard to earn insurance coverage for PSA testing, raised $8,655 for the cause.

Movember is honoured to have the support of our firefighters. We congratulate the Alberta Firefighters Association for making a positive impact on the state of men's health.
