Prostate Cancer

What we seek to achieve

To support the development and trialling of innovative ideas that could lead to creative solutions that increase levels of social connections and feelings of belongingness for men; particularly those who are at greater risk of becoming socially isolated. These include key ‘at risk’ population groups including new fathers, unemployed men, divorced men and men of low socio economic status.

About the project

In late 2015, the Movember Foundation released a multi-phased funding opportunity within three markets, Australia, Canada and the UK, that utilized an innovative approach to identifying and funding creative and non-traditional solutions that were co-designed by men to improve mental health and wellbeing outcomes through increased social connectivity.  The initiative was a direct response to findings from previously funded Movember research through beyondblue that highlighted an overall dissatisfaction for men, particularly in their middle years, with the quantity and quality of their friendships and elucidated the importance of strong social support networks to mitigate the associated risk factors of isolation and loneliness on depression, anxiety and suicide. 

The goal is to increase our understanding about what will engage men in healthier behaviour patterns, build positive relationships, and increase levels of social connections through the development, piloting and evaluation of innovative initiatives explicitly aimed at restoring and strengthening the social connections of men.

The program has been structured over three phases: Phase 1- Ideation & Development, Phase 2 – Piloting (Implementation), and Phase 3 – Amplify Reach & Sustainability, and includes a third-party evaluator and a knowledge community to cultivate and share project knowledge. 

What we are doing/have done:
Twelve project teams (5 Australian, 4 United Kingdom, and 3 Canadian) were selected to pilot their project plans over a 2-year period which ended via the submission of a business plan 31 August 2019.   

Business plans were assessed by a panel of subject panel experts based on pre-established criteria for continued investment in Phase 3 which has been designed to build on the outcomes from piloting. Six teams were successful in the assessment process and will be moving on under two streams. Three will continued piloting for 18 months at $150,000 AUD per project and three, one in each participating market, will implement full scaling of business plans for 36 months averaging approximately $750,000 AUD each. 

The third-party evaluation team will continue to work with project teams to evaluate project outcomes and impact and teams will remain engaged in the knowledge community.
