Historically, men have been hesitant to seek medical attention when something seems wrong with their health. Also, men aren't as likely as women to have preventive screenings and checkups with their healthcare team. This is a problem because early detection of a medical issue is the best way to treat and manage it effectively.

Prostate cancer takes the top of the list as not only is it a male-specific health condition, but it is also the 2nd most prevalent cancer among men and the 4th highest overall for cancer in terms of the total number of cases, according to the World Cancer Research Fund.
Scientists from the Washington State University uncovered the importance of CHRM1, a receptor protein that plays a huge role in the resistance of prostate cancer cells to chemotherapy. They found that inhibiting CHRM1 with the generic drug dicyclomine helped doxetacel, a compound in chemotherapy, effectively eliminate prostate cancer cells.

Cleveland Clinic Study reveals that 87% of men are concerned about how their current health habits will affect their health in the future. However nearly 2 out of 5 Gen Z men (born 1997-2005) do not have an established primary care provider. As a result, many men from this generation say they’ve never, or are not sure if they’ve ever, had their blood pressure, cholesterol, or BMI/weight checked.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with an estimated one in eight Canadian men expected to be diagnosed in their lifetimes. For prostate cancer that remains in the prostate, localized, the survival rate at five years is virtually 100 per cent.
Still, the Canadian Cancer Society estimates that, on average, 14 Canadian men are expected to die from prostate cancer every day in 2024.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?
(Dr. Howard E. Lewine M.D. Chief Medical Editor, Harvard Health Publishing)

In its early stages, prostate cancer rarely causes symptoms. In fact, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer have no symptoms. Doctors suspect prostate cancer if a blood test shows high levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). However,if the cancer presses on the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, it can cause a weak urine stream, a need to urinate often, and sometimes an inability to urinate.

Depression and anxiety: Exercise and running eases symptoms

Shout out to Ryan Elbe for being the first to crush over 7 km as part of his Movember campaign!

First Responders face tragedy on a regular basis. When you have depression or anxiety, exercise often seems like the last thing you want to do. But once you get started and keep going, exercise can make a big difference.

Exercise helps prevent and improve many health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis. Research on depression, anxiety and exercise shows that the mental health and physical benefits of exercise also can help mood get better and lessen anxiety.

The links between depression, anxiety and exercise aren't entirely clear. But working out and other forms of physical activity can ease symptoms of depression or anxiety and make you feel better. Exercise also may help keep depression and anxiety from coming back once you're feeling better.

Resilient Minds is a peer-support program that launched in 2016 and began rolling out in Ontario in 2020 with the help from funding through Movember, and aims to help firefighters across the country talk about trauma and mental health issues and teach them to develop self-care skills.

Firefighters who have completed the training have reported a remarkable 95% decrease in stress levels, and have experienced a transformation and shift in culture with regards to a more open dialogue about mental health and psychological illness.
