Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, except for skin cancers. The chance of getting prostate cancer goes up as a man gets older. Most prostate cancers are found in men over the age of 65. African American men and Caribbean men of African ancestry are more likely to develop prostate cancer than men of other races. Having one or more close relatives with prostate cancer also increases a man’s risk of having prostate cancer.

In 2009, approximately 238,000 people died in Canada, including 3,890 suicides. This resulted in 11.5 suicides per 100,000 people. That year, 2,989 men committed suicide (17.9 deaths per 100,000), compared with 901 women (5.3 deaths per 100,000).

Canada has the highest suicide rate (suicides per 100,000) for men and women aged 45 to 59. This is unlike most other countries, where suicide rates tend to be higher among older adults than among middle-aged adults.
