It took me about 2 seconds to decide I wanted to fundraise for Movember this year. I’ve done a Movember campaign as an athlete, and I think it’s been over a decade since my last personal involvement. It started when I was tobogganing, a fellow slider brought it to my attention, and so we put up our shingles and grew some moustaches while we were on tour and had fun with facial hair. Now that Movember has a lot of public awareness, and it's in people's consciousness, they know what is happening. So, when they see the fellas growing this stubble on their top lip through the month of November, they can make tangible connections. That was the impetus.

With what my father went through with prostate cancer and what it is that you do mentally and physically, to overcome those types of adversities, Movember is something that has much more connective tissue to me now than ever before.

When men start talking about things that were historically just never discussed – because it wasn't part of what was perceived to be manly – it can be powerful. It's an opportunity to sit back and consider and verbalize what it is that I'm feeling, and I hope that I do a better job of imparting that onto my children. Not with disdain for what was shown to me, but just an awareness and an evolution of what it is to be a man.
