This is my fourth Movember. I had second thoughts about doing it this year: with all the strife and suffering in the world and with so many people having a tough time financially it felt a bit silly.
Then I got a note from a friend who was fundraising for something else and I thought, "Life doesn't stop." The world still turns. People who needed help last year still need it now.
If I can raise a couple of dollars it will at least be a positive thing amidst all the chaos. If I don't raise a dime BUT I make someone think again about a friend or relative that is struggling with mental health - or even reach someone who is dealing with it themselves and point them in the direction of help - then I will consider it a great success.
And if I can make someone smile or laugh with some silly post about my 'stache I will consider that, too, a job well done.
I did shave Nov. 1 but dragged my heels getting my campaign going. This pic isn't exactly clean-shaven but if you'd seen me a couple of days before I looked like an old prospector.
Last year I used a friend as my motivation. This past year it feels like we've lost too many friends and family for me to choose. So I'm doing it this year in honour of my brothers: Mal, Rick, and Terry - all still kicking. Thank you for the many times you have helped me crawl out of a hole.
Figuratively, of course. Literally it was usually Rick who put me in a hole. We have it on film.
For all the men in your life, take some time to check in, make sure they're doing their exercises (you know who you are), and let them know asking for help does not make you weak. It's actually pretty smart.
Oh: and F**k cancer.
