I successfully completed in September 2018 treatments for prostate cancer at Sunnybrook Hospital Toronto ending a one-year process since my diagnosis.  I would like to share my recent experience with prostate cancer to raise awareness and combat the stigma that can often be associated with this form of cancer.  I was diagnosed early because of a PSA test used to detect this type of cancer as part of my annual physical. 

I was diagnosed in December 2017 after a biopsy confirmed what was originally detected through the PSA test.  I met with several doctors in the winter and spring before deciding on the best course of treatment.  My prognosis is excellent because this was detected early, and the MRI guided radiation treatment I selected results in minimal side effects. 

I enrolled in a unique clinical trial for 30-men at Sunnybrook known as 2SMART.  (Two Stereotactic MRI- Guided Ablative Adaptive Radiotherapy Treatments for Prostate Cancer)  It is a high-precision technique using MRI which has the ability to deliver a more intensive dose of radiation sculpted to the prostate gland and tumour, while minimizing the damage to adjacent organs.   Dr. Andrew Loblaw and his Sunnybrook team did an outstanding job.  You can learn more about advancing the cause for prostate cancer awareness with ProstateCancer.ca
 Globally, more than 1.4M men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. The Movember Foundation is working to halve the number of deaths from prostate cancer by 2030, and I want to help them get there. Help me stop men dying too young.
