Men’s health and wellbeing in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and United States

Findings from an international online pilot survey (Executive Summary)

The Global Health & Wellbeing 2015 Survey was commissioned by the Movember Foundation and conducted by the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre (Young and Well CRC) and The University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre. The survey explored the health beliefs, perceptions and health behaviours of 10,765 people aged 16 years and older in the five countries. The survey results point to the impact of the vulnerable times in a man’s life, revealing men’s helpful and harmful responses to tough times, and how different life events that are perceived by many as stressful are associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviours for men of different ages. It also emphasises the importance of social connection for good health and wellbeing.
 

 

 

Development and validation of a prediction algorithm for the onset of common mental disorders in a working population (AUS)

A secondary analysis of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey was done to help develop an algorithm with good discrimination for the onset identifying overall and modifiable risks of common mental disorders among working men. This is has the potential to change the way prevention of common mental disorders at the workplace is conducted.
 

 

 

Think You Can Shrink? A Proof-of-Concept Study for Men’s Health Education Through Edutainment

Think You Can Shrink? (TYCS) is a multi-episode web series modelled on a reality TV show format. The show’s key objective is to educate men and demonstrate, through modelling, ways men can support other men to encourage help-seeking behaviours and greater health communication, which in turn, may also lead to better health outcomes.
 

 

 

Older men’s perceptions of the need for and access to male-focused community project such as Men’s Sheds

Men’s Sheds is a community project used primarily by older men that originated in Australia and is well established there. The goal of the current study was to explore men’s perceptions of the need for Men’s Sheds and issues concerning access to them in Canada.

 

 

Inherited DNA-Repair Gene Mutations in Men with Metastatic Prostate Cancer

In this multicenter study, approximately 12% of men with metastatic prostate cancer harbour inherited (germline) DDR mutations that likely caused their disease, even if they have no family history of prostate, breast, or ovarian cancer.

 

 

Preferred Features of E-Mental Health Programs for Prevention of Major Depression in Male Workers: Results From a Canadian National Survey (CAN)

E-mental health programs can be a promising strategy for prevention of depression in working men by considering men’s preferences and perceived barriers to enhance the acceptability of this approach.

 

 

Prostate Cancer Outcomes Australia 2016 Annual Report (AUS)

The Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry – Australia and New Zealand (PCOR-ANZ) is an important tool for improving the lives of men living with prostate cancer. Registries can tell us about the characteristics of men diagnosed with prostate cancer, treatment patterns, and the types, duration and seriousness of treatment side effects. The first annual report covers information from Victoria and South Australia.

Tumour genomic and microenvironmental heterogeneity for integrated prediction of 5-year biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer: a retrospective cohort study (CAN)

This is the first study of cancer outcome to integrate DNA-based and microenvironment-based failure indices to predict patient outcome. Patients exhibiting these aggressive features after biopsy should be entered into treatment intensification trials.

Whole-exome sequencing reveals the mutational spectrum of testicular germ cell tumours

Whole-exome sequencing (WES) of 42 TGCTs were performed to comprehensively study the cancer’s mutational profile and provide further insights into genes involved in the development and progression of TGCT.

 

 

Evidence for a gender-based approach to mental health program: identifying the key considerations associated with “being male” – Rapid Review (UK)

The aim of this report is to find out what the evidence base is relevant to testing the proposal that “being male” is a key consideration for understanding mental health outcomes and service development.

 

 

“Men’s experiences with suicidal behavior and depression” project (AUS)

This study identifies contributors and warning signs for suicidality among men, and factors that may prevent or interrupt suicidal behaviour.

 

 

Game on: Exploring the impact of technologies on young men’s mental health and wellbeing (AUS)

This report focuses specifically on young men aged 16 to 25 years and is based on findings from the first Young and Well National Survey.

 

 

Increasing utilisation of mental health services for adolescent males with anxiety disorders (AUS)

This study evaluated two methods of directing adolescent males to an online treatment service: i) one which used enhanced methods to target potential barriers to treatment (Enhanced Utilisation; EU) and ii) one which used current methods (Standard Utilisation; SU).

 

 

Kids Help Phone: Developing a New Go-To Online Mental Health Platform Designed for Young Men in Canada (CAN)

This brief report focuses on Kids Help Phone, which is Canada’s only national, professional helpline for children, youth and young adults. BroTalk.ca is a new mobile-responsive microsite (website) and Live Chat service option for young men to reach out for help.

 

 

Androgen receptor expression in circulating tumour cells from castration-resistant prostate cancer patients treated with novel endocrine agents

A circulating tumour cells (CTCs)-based assay was developed to evaluate AR expression in real-time in CRPC and investigated nuclear AR expression in CTCs in patients treated with enzalutamide and abiraterone.

 

 

Stigma in Male Depression and Suicide: A Canadian Sex Comparison Study (CAN)

This national survey is the first in Canada to examine stigma (social and self) toward men with depression and men who die by suicide.

 

 

Injury, Interiority, and Isolation in Men’s Suicidality (CAN)

Study exploring the connections between masculinities and experience of suicidality from suicide survivors. The findings offer multiple intervention points and strategies, including
promoting men’s social connectedness.
