The Canadian Men's Health Network

The Canadian Men's Health Network (CMHN) is a Movember Foundation initiative that was started to address critical men's health issues today and in the future. The CMHN brings together some of the top scientific and medical professionals from across the country to collaborate on identifying and addressing men's health issues. The first initiative of this network is men's mental health.

Within the network is a panel of key men's health experts that act as an advisory panel to Movember Canada. In consultation with key stakeholders from the mental health field, the panel assists in identifying gaps in Canadian men's mental health. Funds from Movember will be invested in the identified priority areas.

THE FACTS
  • 1 out of 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime and the remaining 4 will have a family member of colleague who will.
  • Mental health issues affect over 3.4 million Canadian men and boys each year.
  • 4 out of 5 suicides among young people in Canada are committed by men
  • 1 in 4 cancer patients experience clinical depression.
  • The risk of suicide in men with prostate cancer is over 4 times that of a similarly aged man without prostate cancer.
  • Mental health issues are one of the largest threats to men's health.

Like prostate cancer, mental health issues are not commonly spoken about and through Movember and the power of the moustache we aim to reduce stigma, increase awareness and understanding of this cause, and impact on access to care for all Canadians.

Led by Dr. Larry Goldenberg as network chair, the CMHN advisory panel will be comprised of members from varying backgrounds and geographic regions in Canada. In the coming months this group will meet with key stakeholders in the mental health arena to identify priority areas to be addressed with Movember funding. Funding will be allocated to projects addressing these priorities through an open, peer reviewed, request for proposal mechanism. Funded institutions and individuals will work in collaborative efforts to address these critical areas.
