What we seek to achieve

To support the development and trialling of innovative ideas that could lead to creative solutions that increase levels of social connections and feelings of belongingness for men; particularly those who are at greater risk of becoming socially isolated. These include key ‘at risk’ population groups including new fathers, unemployed men, divorced men and men of low socio economic status.

About the project

The Social Innovators Challenge was designed to enable the Movember Foundation to initiate activity in a key results area of our mental health strategy, increasing social connectedness in men and boys. Based on Movember funded research by our partner, beyondblue, men’s lack of social connections lead to social isolation and loneliness which have been identified as risk factors for anxiety, depression and suicide.

The goal is to increase our understanding about what will engage men in healthier behaviour patterns, build positive relationships, and increase levels of social connections through the development, piloting and evaluation of innovative initiatives explicitly aimed at restoring and strengthening the social connections of men.

A three-phase process has been developed to achieve this: 

Phase 1 - Inspiration & Development: Involved the solicitation of ideas followed by a 6 month period of immersion research to work with their targeted population groups to solidify their concept and approach and develop a plan that can potentially be piloted. 

Phase 2 – Piloting: Teams that have submitted the most comprehensive and promising pilot project plans at the end of the development period will be supported to implement and test their idea over a two year period.

Phase 3 – Scaling: Will see those projects showing promising results funded based on scalability and sustainability.
   
What we are doing/have done:
A request for innovative ideas was released to the public in October 2015 in Australia, Canada and the UK that resulted in 440 Inspiration Statements being submitted for consideration.  Eighty eight project teams were invited to pitch their idea to the pitch review panel via a 3 minute video and short written proposal. A total of 77 pitches were received and reviewed by an arms-length panel of subject matter experts that resulted in 23 projects awarded development grants. Project teams then spent 6 months working with their target populations to research, design and develop a pilot project plan that could be trialled in the next phase of the program.

In March 2017, The Chair and seven individuals from the pitch review panel with subject matter expertise (men’s health and mental health, vulnerable populations, GBTQ, fatherhood, social innovation & technology, youth programs, as well as health interventions and policy) returned to assess the pilot project plan submissions.  

As of September 1, 2017 the initiative is now in the piloting phase with 13 teams selected to test their project plans over the next two years.  An external evaluation team has been contracted to work with Movember and the teams to develop the framework for programmatic and project level evaluation.
