Movember - Changing the face of men's health

Men have thrived on challenges throughout history. The challenge to discover new lands, climb higher mountains and solve seemingly impossible tasks. It is now evident men need to unite and embrace a new challenge - to improve their collective health.

However we look at it, men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy for men is five years less than women (presently 77 compared to 82).

Of the 15 leading causes of death among Canadians, men lead women in 14 of the causes. Men are 30% more likely to get cancer, than women, and 55% more likely to die from it. Men's suicide rate is four times higher than that of women.

The obvious question is why?

Part of the answer is a lack of awareness about the very real health issues faced by males. Also contributing to the problem is an attitude of having to be tough, a "real man "  and men's reluctance to see a doctor about an illness or to go for regular medical check ups.

The aim of Movember is to change this attitude, make male health fun by putting the moustache back on the face of fashion and in the process raise some serious funds for key men's health issues.

The key men's health cause for Movember 2008 in Canada is:

Prostate Cancer: working in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada
[www.prostatecancer.ca] because every year 4,300 Canadian men die of prostate cancer. [FIND OUT MORE]

For information on other serious men's health issues included on the website specifically look at:

Testicular Cancer because it's the most common cancer in young men aged 18 to 35. [FIND OUT MORE]

Health issues faced by men differ depending on age.

Together we can change the face of men's health.
