Community Program

Each year increasing numbers local communities are embracing the moustache and getting involved with Movember. In cities and towns across Canada, the young, the old, and everyone in between can be found doing their part to raise awareness and support for men’s health. The levels and types of support vary from one community to the next, but these grassroots efforts play a vital role in helping Movember achieve its awareness and fundraising goals.

Movember grew from the ground up, fuelled by enthusiasm, love of the Mo and a passion for men’s health. Starting with only 30 supporters in Australia, it has grown to become a movement which last year saw a worldwide army of 450,000 Mo Bros and Sistas supporting men’s health, growing moustaches and engaging in open and constructive conversation. This truly shows how men’s health is becoming a global issue, and one which people are concerned about.

By growing a Mo and effectively becoming walking, talking billboards for men’s health, Mo Bros, aided by Mo Sistas, have spread positive health messages far wider than ever originally anticipated. It is this passionate, on the ground action that gives Movember its edge, enabling it to make a real, tangible impact on the state of men’s health.

There are hundreds of ways for a community to get involved with Movember - Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, using their creativity, add to the list of ideas every year.

To get you started, here are a few great ways to get your community on board with Movember:

How to get your community involved

Register a team or network at Movember.com.
Host a local registration party to encourage Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to sign up.
Encourage a bit of healthy competition between businesses by getting them to register.
Get your local sports team involved: football, basketball, soccer- any sport is great!
Encourage local clubs, bars and restaurants to do their part for men’s health- moustaches on menus, Mo Bro lunches, or free entry for Mo Bros and Mo Sistas for the month.
Order Movember posters and post them at key spots around your community.
Approach local well known faces to grow a Mo and champion the cause publicly.
Invite your local doctor to give a talk at an organized men’s health evening.
Organize an end of month shave-off at a local barber shop.
Order a Movember Party pack and host an end of month Mo Party to judge the best Mo in the community.
You’re probably getting the picture now…use your creativity.
And talk to us! We love hearing about the amazing things you’re doing and we love helping out.

Looking for further inspiration, check out some of the incredible ways communities and groups have supported Movember in the past.

From Big Man on Campus to Big Mo:
In 2010 12,325 students from across the country jumped aboard the Movember train and together raised over $1.2 million. Many campuses organized Movember Clubs that came together to establish the best strategy for engaging their entire student population including; undergraduates, post-graduates, faculties, sports teams, residences and professors. Mo Bro Jason Banducci was the chair of the Movember committee at The University of Western Ontario - the top fundraising campus in Canada-559 students from UWO raised an incredible $51,730. “Everyday professors attempt to teach us lessons in the classroom,” stated Jason “if they only knew the power of a man with a Mo!”

POPO to MOPO:

With support from the Canadian Police Association, Police professionals from coast to coast got behind the campaign and challenged each other to grow mo’s and raise funds to ensure that their friends, family and their communities were aware of the health risks men face. Raising an incredible $151,061.39 (with 575 members), policemen and policewomen came together to show their communities they cared about men’s health. Under the direction and inspired by the passion of Mo Sista Andria Cowan, Team MOPO T.O. 55 Hairs, was the top MOPO team raising over $26,000. If you’re pulled over during Movember, better hope you have a Mo.

Movember goes to Parliament:

Three dedicated Mo Bros from Burlington, Ontario, Cam MacDonell, Brandon Pascoa, and Nicholas Kewin, cycled from Toronto’s Queens Park to Ottawa’s Capital Hill. Spreading the Movember word as they went, and supported by their trusty road crew in a Movember wrapped smart car, Jesse Hayman, Brad Hails, and J Dinn, the trip took the team four days, covering 500 kilometres – no speeding for those guys!

The Making of a Mo:

Halifax has always made the moustache feel at home. Led by Ryan Joseph, a few champions gathered all the moustachioed Haligonians and created the world’s largest man-made moustache on the Halifax Common. Another example of Movember bringing people together and a community spreading Mo love and ensuring people know what the mo really means. Check out this mo!
